The Ring Pass Not



The Old Guard raised its gnarled, knobby head hissing, “so, you think you can be happy, you think you can be free, now? Would you risk the treasure?

I sensed the sudden shudder of terror seizing my heart as it lay sheltered in solitude, safe from the surging flood of life beyond its fortress and sighed deeply and longingly, turning towards the east, still cast in darkness.

 Keeping my gaze steadfast, after what seemed an eternity, I breathed deeply and replied, “ dawn breaks bright and clear upon a new day.”
